Eyelid correction (blepharoplasty)

Eyelid correction (blepharoplasty) is a procedure that corrects sagging skin or "bags" above or under the eyes. This procedure helps to restore a youthful and energetic appearance to the eye area. After an evaluation of the patient's anatomy and expectations the plastic surgeon will recommend correction to the upper or lower eyelid, or to both.

Procedure

The surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic, but it can be performed under general anaesthetic as well. The removal of excess skin in the upper eyelids is made through incisions performed in natural creases so postoperative scars remain almost invisible. Removal of the fatty bags around the eye, along with the excess skin, is recommended.  Surgery on the lower eyelids is carried out through conjunctival incisions, so the scars after the surgery are completely invisible. If there is excess not only of fatty bags but also of the skin, the incision is made right below the lashes and some of the skin is removed as well.

Operation risks

Blepharoplasty, like any other intervention, can have side effects such as reactions to anaesthesia, postoperative pain, eye irritation, tightness, prolonged bleeding, wound edge separation, wound infection, and scar hypertrophy. Other possible complications or adverse reactions should be discussed with the plastic surgeon during a consultation.

Postoperative period

Healing usually lasts for a couple of weeks, but patients can return to normal physical activity after a few days. Bruising and swelling persist for several weeks but can be masked with sunglasses.

The cosmetic effect of blepharoplasty can last for years or decades, but to a large extent this depends on the patient's lifestyle and genetics.
